About United Gold Direct
United Gold Direct was first founded in 1996, however it originally had a different name. About 13 years later, in 2009, the company changed its name to United Gold Direct.
United Gold Direct aims to be the best company for their customers. Unlike some other precious metals investment companies, they don't use pushy sales tactics and believe in being honest and upfront with their customers. When you are quoted a price with United Gold Direct, you can be confident that that is what you'll pay; they don't have any hidden fees.
There are a limited number of licensed wholesalers for precious metals in the United States. United Gold Direct is one of these few wholesalers, which allows them to offer very competitive pricing for precious metals.
Working with United Gold Direct
If you're interested in doing business with United Gold Direct, the best way to do so is to call the company's main phone number. You'll be connected with one of their representatives who can help you with placing an order.
If you're interested in opening up a Precious Metals IRA, United Gold Direct can also help you. They are not an IRA custodian, but they will work with the custodian company you choose to help you get all the precious metals you are interested in added to your account.
After you set up your Precious Metals IRA, United Gold Direct will send your metals to the Delaware Depository, an IRS-approved facility. The Delaware Depository is one of the safest and most trusted storage facilities in the country, so you can feel confident that your retirement account will be secure until you're ready to cash in your assets.
Available Precious Metals
If you choose to work with United Gold Direct, you'll find that they have a variety of coins and bars for you to choose from. Many of these also meet the IRS regulations to be held in an IRA.
You can invest in gold, silver, platinum, or palladium bullion, coins, bars, ingots, rare coins, and more with United Gold Direct.
Are There Any Red Flags for United Gold Direct?
So, now you know a little more about United Gold Direct. The next step is to identify whether there are any red flags that tell you that working with this company may not be the best choice. We have found it very helpful to check with different online review sites to help us learn more about how a company operates.
Unless you personally know someone that has done business with United Gold Direct, checking online reviews from other customers is the next best thing. As we were compiling information for this article, we checked with five of our favorite online review sites (Better Business Bureau, Business Consumer Alliance, TrustLink, Trustpilot, and Google) to see what they had to say about United Gold Direct.
As you can see from the information below, there are not a lot of reviews from past customers. This fact doesn't mean that United Gold Direct isn't a good company to work with, but it isn't as reassuring as when you find a company with hundreds (or even thousands) of positive reviews.
We'll go into it a bit more in the next section, but when we were checking the BBB's website, we also discovered that United Gold Direct was recently facing litigation from the Department of Business Oversight in California.
Is United Gold Direct a Scam?
So, the big question that is always on your mind before choosing to give your business to a company: Is United Gold Direct a scam? No, it does not appear that United Gold Direct is a scam. They have been in business for more than two decades (with a name change in 2009), and appear to offer the products and services advertise on their website.
However, simply because we don't think United Gold Direct is a scam, it doesn't mean that they are our first choice when you're looking to invest in precious metals. There are a few things about this company that give us pause in wholeheartedly recommending them.
First, as we mentioned above, the BBB's website references litigation from the Department of Business Oversight in California. Apparently, it has been alleged that Marc Rudolph Harrison and United Gold Direct have inappropriately used the money that some clients have paid them to cover various expenses. It sounds like this case has been settled and that United Gold Direct will be refunding any misused funds, but the fact that this happened in the first place is definitely concerning.
Another thing that gives us pause about recommending United Gold Direct over other companies is the lack of reviews. We were only able to find a few reviews on the various review sites we visited. And, while these reviews were generally positive (on TrustLink and Google), there still weren't that many reviews to go off of. When you consider that some other precious metals investment companies have thousands of positive reviews, it makes you wonder why there are so few for United Gold Direct.
If you check with Ripoff Report, you'll also find some negative feedback from customers. There are two different reports filed against United Gold Direct. One of these reports alleges that the company took money from a customer and did not deliver the metals that were paid for. The other claims that the pre-1933 gold coins being sold are extremely overpriced and that the company is ripping off its customers.
Pros & Cons of United Gold Direct
When you're ready to invest in precious metals, we'd recommend going with one of our top-rated precious metals investment companies. We have some reservations with strongly recommending United Gold Direct based on the litigation filed in California and the lack of online customer reviews. In the end, you need to decide what is the right choice for you and your money. Do you think you'll be investing with United Gold Direct?
Although we think United Gold Direct is a pretty solid company, they did not make our top 5 list. We believe that the companies on this list provide better options.
